How to import Excel to ArcGIS Online
1

Upload your Excel or CSV file

Drag & drop your file into GISGP Import Studio. First row must be column headers. Supports .xlsx, .xls and .csv — up to 10 MB. GISGP detects encoding and date formats automatically.

2

Select the target Feature Service and map fields

Paste your FeatureServer URL or pick from saved services. GISGP shows your file columns alongside the layer's field names — drag to match them. Unmapped columns are skipped. Save the mapping as a profile for next time.

3

Preview, choose import mode and confirm

See the first 10 rows exactly as they'll appear in ArcGIS Online. Choose Add new records or Update existing (upsert) — upsert matches rows by a key field and updates existing features without duplicates. Then click Confirm & Import.

Common questions
Do I need ArcGIS Pro to import Excel to ArcGIS Online?+

No. GISGP uploads data directly to the ArcGIS Online REST API from your browser. No ArcGIS Pro, no Python, no desktop software. A free GISGP account is all you need.

How many rows can I import for free?+

The free plan supports up to 100 rows per import and 3 imports per month. Paid plans go up to 250,000 rows (Business). Upgrade at any time — no long-term contract.

What is upsert (update by key) mode?+

Upsert prevents duplicate records. Choose a key field (e.g. asset_id) and GISGP will update existing features where the key matches and add new features for rows not yet in ArcGIS Online. Ideal for monthly data refreshes.

Does it work with ArcGIS Enterprise Portal?+

Yes. Paste your Enterprise Portal FeatureServer URL and a token from that portal. The import workflow is identical to ArcGIS Online.

Can I import coordinates (latitude/longitude) from Excel?+

Yes. If your Excel file has columns named Latitude/Longitude (or X/Y), GISGP creates Point features automatically — no GIS software needed to geocode your data.
